Getting started in Drag Racing is no where as difficult as it seems and in the Sportsman ET class your pockets don't need to be very deep.

If you have a car that you feel could be a good racer then the first port of call would be a Run-What-You-Brung (RWYB) event.

A RWYB event allows you to take your car down the quarter mile and to find out your car's performance.

Note: And this is important. For all RWYB events you must provide a full valid driving licence. For all the RWYB rules visit the RWYB website.

Your times dictate what class you will go in. In Sportsman ET you can't go any faster than 11.99. If you do then you'll be looking to go into Pro ET.

The next step is to apply for your competition licence from the Motor Sports Association (MSA). For any class of Drag Racing you must have a valid competition licence. Although at York Raceway an MSA license is not necessary. An IOPD license is acceptable and can be obtained on the day of a meeting, and pre entry is not required, just turn up on the day.

The next step is to register your vehicle with a Drag Racing Club. You will be then be issued with a race number and rule book which will inform you of all your class regulations such as firesuit, helmet and racing do's and don'ts.

Once you have your firesuit, gloves helmet, car! you are almost ready. The last step is to enter a race. You can obtain all race entry forms for the National Championships from Santa Pod Racer Club.
